UNIQUE AND VERY RARE!! Preserved by the Philadelphia Academy for nearly a century!
Historical museum plate of Pyrargyrite crystals with Acanthite and Quartz from Tonopah, Nevada!
An unbelievable find!!! This specimen was presented as a gift to the Philadelphia Academy in 1915 by
the Tonopah-Belmont Mining Company and has not been touched or messed with since it was found in the
mine pocket nearly 100 years ago. Large cabinet in size, this is a true relic from the earliest Silver mining
history of Nevada and represents the largest and finest specimen that I've ever seen from Tonopah or
any other locale in Nevada for that matter. The plate features dozens of shiny, lustrous Pyrargyrite
crystals with Acanthite and white Quartz points. There's a good deal of color remaining in these ruby-silvers
and many of the Pyrargyrites show red under normal lighting A direct spotlight really brings out the color!
Obviously this cabinet sized plate has been well protected during its many decades in the Academy!

Measures 16 cm by 19 cm by 6 cm in total size.
From the Tonopah-Belmont Mining Company, Tonopah Mining District, Nye County, Nevada.

Tucson2014-85CopperMorenciMineArizona17cm.jpg (266614 bytes)

MIN#Tucson2016-142 NEW!

Aesthetic specimen featuring Native Copper crystals sitting atop matrix!
This is a borderline large cabinet sized specimen and it is incredibly attractive in both form and color!
The specimen is very crystalline and the majority of the surfaces are reddish in color, indicating the
presence of micro-Cuprite. I love the way the Native Copper climbs the matrix and rises upwards above
it near the center point. The overall visual impact is striking and very sculptural. The fine coating of
Cuprite also means the color will remain constant and remain reddish-brown. This is a specimen that
could actually be displayed from either side. If you turn the specimen around, you have the appearance
of Native Copper crystals perched atop matrix. I prefer the side shown in the photograph however.
From the N. W. Extension, Morenci Mine, Copper Mtn Dist., Shannon Mts, Greenlee Co., Arizona.
Measures 16.4 cm by 13.8 cm by 6.2 cm in total size.

Tucson2014-79AllargentumHartensteinGermany76mm.jpg (255348 bytes)

MIN#Tucson2016-143 NEW!

Scarce specimen of lustrous Allargentum crystals on sparkling matrix!
Allargentum is a Silver-Antimony mineral which isn't seen as often as I would like.
This specimen features lustrous, distinct crystals which show well against the drusy-like
matrix. Some of the crystal faces appear "etched" but I think this is only matrix influence.
From Hartenstein, Erzgebirge, Saxony, Germany.
Measures 6.1 cm by 5.4 cm by 3.8 cm in total size.

Shiny Azurite crystal clusters on Malachite!
A fascinating specimen due to the way the Azurite cluster become more distinct and form large
individual crystals near the bottom. The clusters and Azurite crystals are all in excellent condition
with a flashy luster. They fill the slightly concave structure in the middle of the Malachite matrix.

From the Big Indian Mine, San Juan County, Utah.

VERY RARE and historic specimen of crystalline Native Gold on altered Rhyolite matrix!
A very rich specimen of Native Gold from a locality that is tied to one of the most famous ghost towns
in America - Rhyolite, Nevada! The photo above shows the brilliant Gold crystals which are bright in
color and very lustrous. The matrix is typical to the Bullfrog District and matches the material I've
personally dug many times while exploring the Rhyolite area. This specimen dates to the early 1900s
and was displayed in the Beatty Exchange Club
for years until it was donated to the Keck Museum.
I've only seen three specimens of Gold from the Rhyolite District and two of those are in this update.
From near Rhyolite, Bullfrog District, Nye County, Nevada.
Total specimen weight is 57 grams.
Measures 4.5 cm by 2.2 cm by 3.5 cm in total size.

MIN#Tucson2016-146 NEW!

Very rare combination featuring Argentite ps. after Galena with Realgar and Xanthoconite crystals on Barite!
Xanthoconite is a rare Silver Arsenic Sulfide (
Ag3AsS3). These rare specimens came to market years ago and
only a few good ones were available at that time. They've long since disappeared and I haven't seen one in
almost a decade. The Xanthoconite can be seen scattered about atop the Barite blades near the Argentite
which has completely pseudomorphed and taken on the habit of the Galena cubes. Red Proustite crystals
are also present on this unique Silver specimen, displaying a close association with the Xanthoconite.

MIN#Tucson2016-147 NEW!

Exceptional specimen featuring large crystals of Native Copper!
The large triangular crystal on the top measures 3.5 cm in size! Smaller crystals measuring to nearly 3 cm
form the majority of what is a large dendritic-styled growth pattern. The Copper surfaces are lustrous with an
attactive reddish-brown patina. The specimen is very asethetic and the crystal placement makes it 3-dimensional.

From the Ahmeek Mine, Ahmeek, Keweenaw Peninsula, Michigan.
Measures 9.6 cm by 4.3 cm by 4.4 cm in size.

MIN#Tucson2016-149 NEW!

Wonderful cluster of sharp, dogtoothed Calcite crystals with Selenite on matrix!
This is a really neat combination and the specimen is in near perfect condition. I don't detect any
damage to the sharply terminated dogtooth crystals. There is a light sprinkling of Selenite atop
many of the crystals and a pair of larger Selenite crystal clusters along the front side. The Calcite
crystals are highly lustrous with a tan -brown coloration. I really like the way the specimen takes
on the appearance of cluster mounds with the center being the highest point. You don't see many
specimens of this quality from Santa Eulalia anymore. This specimen was mined in the late 1960s.
From the Santa Eulalia District, Mun. de Aquiles Serdán, Chihuahua, Mexico.

MIN#Tucson2016-150 NEW!

Beautiful old classic featuring glassy-lustrous Azurite crystals on chatoyant Malachite!
This specimen contrast Azurite crystals with chatoyant surfaces and is a great example of the beautiful
material coming from the Bisbee Mining District in the late 1880s-1890s. In excellent condition for its age
with only trivial contacts and clean surfaces. The glassiness increases as the crystals move up the matrix.

MIN#Tucson2016-152 NEW!

Amazing specimen featuring a Native Copper halfbreed with a vug of Native Silver crystals!
At first glance this appears to be a typical Copper-Silver halfbreed nugget with no crystallization
whatsoever. However, when you turn the specimen over, a Silver crystal filled vug appears. I
count about a dozen freestanding crystals filling the vug. I've never seen another piece like this.
The contrast between the vertical Silver crystals and the rounded Copper surfaces is stunning.

MIN#Tucson2016-154 NEW!

Fine specimen of Chrysocolla with Azurite, Malachite, and Tenorite!
This specimen has a little of everything and the various colors forming the textured surfaces are
evidence to this fact. The blue Chrysocolla pops the most along the bottom half and is covered with a
silky luster. The Tenorite is present as the dark, almost black mineral coating in the deeper recesses.

Fine classic Calcite with Hematite on matrix from Germany!
This is an interesting specimen with a perfect 6.5 cm Calcite crystal perched atop
the center of the matrix. Small stacked crystal blades of Hematite sit atop and inside the
Calcite, giving it a reddish-brown hue. The remainder of the Calcite crystal is frosty-white
with glassy, reflective surfaces. There is no damage and the specimen displays very well.

Lustrous, silvery-gray crystal cluster of Stephanite with Calcite on matrix!
VERY impressive example of this late stage Silver Antimony Sulfosalt which is roughly
about 69% Silver by formula. The crystals appear as flattened hexagonal tables with
an obvious twin visible in the photo on the far left side of the cluster.  Crude looking
dogtooth Calcite crystals surround the cluster and cover most of the host rock matrix.

MIN#Tucson2016-158 NEW!

Classic specimen of Native Copper with superb crystallization!
This is only the second cabinet sized Native Copper from Michigan that has caught my eye recently.
The crystallization of impressive Copper is sharp and unique (look at the incredible dendritic crystal
"wings" in the close-up photo!) and the entire specimen is composed of large, thick crystal dendrites
and Spinels. Along the left edge are unique 5.5 cm crystal growths that resemble wings and these are
attached to even larger crystal dendrites which form the majority of the center before finally twisting
their way upwards to the very top. Interesting note - If you look at the very center of the specimen, you
will see a smoother surface area that extends about one third of the specimen. This is an original drill bit
contact from the miner's drill! As if the specimen weren't unique enough, this puts it over the top! And
the provenance isn't too bad either. This specimen is Ex. Russell MacFall who was the former editor of
the Chicago Tribune. This specimen dates to the early 1900's and exhibits an antique patina over luster.
From the Phoenix Mine, Phoenix, Keweenaw County, Michigan.
Measures 16.5 cm by 10 cm by 7.5 cm in total size.

RARE! Lustrous crystals of Nickeline with Nickelskutterudite from Saxony!
This is a rich, old time classic specimen from a very historic locality. The crystals of Nickelskutterudite
(
NiAs2-3) are a highly reflective silverish color while the Nickeline (NiAs) is more pinkish-bronze. The crystals
measure to 1.3 cm in size. There appears to be a smaller coating of a few crystals with what appears to
be Safflorite. The specimen is in excellent condition and probably dates back to the 1940's or 1950's.
Also with some minor Proustite association on the upper right side on the specimen.
