MIN#TUCSON2017-161 NEW!

Beautiful old classic featuring glassy-lustrous Azurite crystals on chatoyant Malachite!
This specimen contrast Azurite crystals with chatoyant surfaces and is a great example of the beautiful
material coming from the Bisbee Mining District in the late 1880s-1890s. In excellent condition for its age
with only trivial contacts and clean surfaces. The glassiness increases as the crystals move up the matrix.
From Bisbee, Warren District, Mule Mts., Cochise County, Arizona.
Measures 5.4 cm by 5.5 cm by 3.6 cm in total size.

MIN#TUCSON2017-162 NEW!

Amazing specimen featuring a Native Copper halfbreed with a vug of Native Silver crystals!
At first glance this appears to be a typical Copper-Silver halfbreed nugget with no crystallization
whatsoever. However, when you turn the specimen over, a Silver crystal filled vug appears. I
count about a dozen freestanding crystals filling the vug. I've never seen another piece like this.
The contrast between the vertical Silver crystals and the rounded Copper surfaces is stunning.
From the Copper Mining District, Keweenaw Peninsula, Michigan.
Measures 5.5 cm by 7.2 cm by 3.3 cm in total size.

MIN#TUCSON2017-163 NEW!

VERY RARE and historic specimen of crystalline Native Gold on altered Rhyolite with Quartz matrix!
A very rich specimen of Native Gold from a locality that is tied to one of the most famous ghost towns
in America - Rhyolite, Nevada! The photo above shows the brilliant Gold dendrites which are bright in
color and very lustrous. The matrix is typical to the Bullfrog District and matches the material I've
personally dug many times while exploring the Rhyolite area. This specimen dates to the early 1900s
and was displayed in the Beatty Exchange Club
for years until it was donated to the Keck Museum.
I've only seen three specimens of Gold from the Rhyolite District and two of those are in this update.
From near Rhyolite, Bullfrog District, Nye County, Nevada.
Total specimen weight is 108.3 grams.
Measures 5 cm by 3.8 cm by 5 cm in total size.

MIN#TUCSON2017-164 NEW!

Fine specimen of Chrysocolla with Azurite, Malachite, and Tenorite!
This specimen has a little of everything and the various colors forming the textured surfaces are
evidence to this fact. The blue Chrysocolla pops the most along the bottom half and is covered with a
silky luster. The Tenorite is present as the dark, almost black mineral coating in the deeper recesses.
From the Morenci Mine, Morenci, Copper Mountain District, Shannon Mts, Greenlee Co., Arizona.
Measures 8 cm by 6 cm by 2.3 cm in total size.

Tucson2014-10CalciteHematiteErzgebirgeGermany9cm.jpg (171644 bytes)

MIN#TUCSON2017-165 NEW!

Fine classic Calcite with Hematite on matrix from Germany!
This is an interesting specimen with a perfect 6.5 cm Calcite crystal perched atop
the center of the matrix. Small stacked crystal blades of Hematite sit atop and inside the
Calcite, giving it a reddish-brown hue. The remainder of the Calcite crystal is frosty-white
with glassy, reflective surfaces. There is no damage and the specimen displays very well.

From the 1620 meter level, Hartenstein Mine #371, Erzgebirge, Saxony, Germany.
Measures 9 cm by 6.4 cm by 5 cm in total size.

MIN#TUCSON2017-166 NEW!

Lustrous, silvery-gray crystal cluster of Stephanite with Calcite on matrix!
VERY impressive example of this late stage Silver Antimony Sulfosalt which is roughly
about 69% Silver by formula. The crystals appear as flattened hexagonal tables with
an obvious twin visible in the photo on the far left side of the cluster.  Crude looking
dogtooth Calcite crystals surround the cluster and cover most of the host rock matrix.
From the Doloras Mine, Real del Monte, Hidalgo, Mexico.
Measures 5 cm by 4.8 cm by 4 cm in total size.

Denver2013-94closeup.jpg (316917 bytes)

MIN#TUCSON2017-167 NEW!

Classic specimen of Native Copper with superb crystallization!
This is only the second cabinet sized Native Copper from Michigan that has caught my eye recently.
The crystallization of impressive Copper is sharp and unique (look at the incredible dendritic crystal
"wings" in the close-up photo!) and the entire specimen is composed of large, thick crystal dendrites
and Spinels. Along the left edge are unique 5.5 cm crystal growths that resemble wings and these are
attached to even larger crystal dendrites which form the majority of the center before finally twisting
their way upwards to the very top. Interesting note - If you look at the very center of the specimen, you
will see a smoother surface area that extends about one third of the specimen. This is an original drill bit
contact from the miner's drill! As if the specimen weren't unique enough, this puts it over the top! And
the provenance isn't too bad either. This specimen is Ex. Russell MacFall who was the former editor of
the Chicago Tribune. This specimen dates to the early 1900's and exhibits an antique patina over luster.
From the Phoenix Mine, Phoenix, Keweenaw County, Michigan.
Measures 16.5 cm by 10 cm by 7.5 cm in total size.

MIN#TUCSON2017-168 NEW!

RARE! Lustrous crystals of Nickeline with Nickelskutterudite from Saxony!
This is a rich, old time classic specimen from a very historic locality. The crystals of Nickelskutterudite
(
NiAs2-3) are a highly reflective silverish color while the Nickeline (NiAs) is more pinkish-bronze. The crystals
measure to 1.3 cm in size. There appears to be a smaller coating of a few crystals with what appears to
be Safflorite. The specimen is in excellent condition and probably dates back to the 1940's or 1950's.
Also with some minor Proustite association on the upper right side on the specimen.
From Schlema, Schlema-Hartenstein District, Erzgebirge, Saxony, Germany.
Measures 5.7 cm by 6.8 cm by 4.2 cm in total size.

Tucson2014-114FerberiteKaraobaKazakhstan132mm.jpg (226817 bytes)

MIN#TUCSON2017-171 NEW!

Large, SUPER LUSTROUS crystals of Ferberite with Quartz and Pyrite!
This is one "black ugly" that's pretty darn attractive. These intensely lustrous, well striated
Ferberite crystals are clustered together as terminated blades of varying sizes. Between the two
layers of Ferberites, there are a scattering of Quartz points and Pyrite cubes. This really makes
the darker Ferberite crystals pop. The terminations are slanted, chisel-like tips and the entire
specimen is in great condition with only minor contacts. The far right side shows matrix influence.
From the Kara-Oba W deposit, Betpakdala Desert, Karagandy Province, Kazakhstan.

Sharp crystals of bipyramidal Wulfenite on Limonite matrix!
These were collected in January of 2008 and have been very popular since coming to market.
These specimen is in excellent condition with very little in the way of contacts. The crystals
appear to be sitting on Descloizite coated matrix but I haven't tested to be certain.

Denver2009-273SilverAcanthiteFosterMineCanada.jpg (204906 bytes)

MIN#TUCSON2017-173 NEW!

Lustrous pyramidal crystal clusters of Acanthite with Native Silver wires!
An amazing combination featuring stacked Acanthite ps. after Argentite (Silver Sulfide) crystals with Native
Silver wires throughout! Obviously the Sulfur component was removed at some point during the development
of this specimen, allowing for the Native Silver growth. Specimens like this always amaze me. They are both
beautiful and extremely interesting in a geological as well as an historical sense. This specimen is a classic
rarity from a major Silver mining district which has faded into the past. Fortunately, great specimens survive
for all collectors to enjoy. I might point out that this specimen is very heavy and nearly solid Silver mineral!
From the Foster Mine, Glen Lake, Coleman Township, near Cobalt, Ontario, Canada.
Measures 8.4 cm by 7 cm by 7.8 cm in total size.

Currently in the Kevin Ward Mineral Collection

Beautifully patinaed specimen of crystalline Native Copper on Copper spinels!
The color of the Copper crystals changes from bright Copper to reddish Copper as you move towards
the bottom. The largest crystals have the deepest patina color and all are sharp with lustrous faces.
I love the way the crystal habits change with each level of growth, mimicking the color change.

Classic specimen of crystalline Azurite balls with Malachite on matrix!
This old specimen is from the old mining town of Clifton which sits just below the Morenci
open pit. The town of Clifton was a thriving mining town but has dwindled in recent years
as the population has left and main street is now nearly deserted. This specimen is from
the early mining days (circa late 1880's) and is an old A. E. Foote specimen
with an attached
Foote label glued to the bottom side. Most likely an Arizona Copper Company specimen.
From Clifton, Clifton-Morenci District, Greenlee County, Arizona.
Measures 6.5 cm by 6.3 cm by 5.2 cm in total size.

I don't think I've seen a specimen with larger crystals from this locality outside of a museum.
